There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.34When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit;35and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.36Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.37Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’39And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

—Was he talking about his coming death? The inheritance in the views at the time with Jesus among the people: the priests were envy that he is getting the spotlight as the “cool” religious figure than the OG ones. If you try to go away from pleasure or goes to uncomfortable situations you will face strong friction, resistance in all your bones. Everything feels like it’s pulling you away from doing the “right” thing—which makes you feel good.

-It seems like unconsciously always I’m running away from hard and boring things and towards easy, pleasurable ones.

-We are so week, I’m week. Impulses get us—we are driven to pleasures with force.

-You don’t put more work—as you need to relax. Your body tells you it’s time to relax all the time. It’s time to enjoy life.

-The solution recommended is to always resist bad things; you fight the temptations with all your power. I bet everyone knows how it feels while doing this. The painful friction we experience as if our body and soul is being dragged away from its own home.

-What is this? was it our nature to begin with? why it feels painful to move away from these things?

-Was it our nature to love comfortably these things which brings pleasure, which are easy. You know it’s so good and it scares you, but you keep pushing away from it at the same time constantly being pulled towards it.

-I think it’s like on default we have been made for easy pleasurable life. It’s our nature that’s why it has always been hard to go away from them even if you manage to do that it still requires enormous amount of energy to maintain your state otherwise you turn back to the old ways as if nothing happened all these years.

-I think it’s in our nature to want to feel good all the time. And by nature, doing and being righteous requires more energy to achieve and maintain.

-But our mind doesn’t want that life, we know it deep inside it’s not what we want, not who we want to be. But these “feels good” are always opposing and resting us whenever we try to change. It has been like this, always fighting and fighting against them.

-Our will power is not strong enough over these things. You can’t fight your own nature.

-The solution I’m thinking about:

I think we might use this nature against us. Yes, we like “feels good” we can use it to trick ourselves into doing what real matters: make what you do playful and enjoy full. You can’t go head-to-head with it will be painful.

The good thing also is once you start doing good things the momentum in doing it, the accomplishments start to feel good; that you start to see the resistance you have been facing before as nothing (as now you feel good). But this is momentary; each time you stop or take a break the frictions come again. It becomes hard to start again.

But one thing is guaranteed: when you are in motion the resistance is not there anymore. You only need one thing each time: when you think it’s about time to do good things you have to trick yourself that you are going to the good mood, you are not going to do something hard.

You only have to trick yourself to start. Don’t depend on will power only, don’t wait for inspiration. Find trick ways to bring you to momentum.

-The tricks I commonly do to work on the projects and things I like:

I go to sit on my workspace and watch all the things I have done, look at my work, look around on every corner—there is no effort I’m putting here but eventually I’ll start to work on it.

I do the easy part or something else which is simple.

The momentum comes and I keep doing it. The will power is not there all the time. It’s not your fault or you are weak, it’s just that is your nature and you have to fight against it every time. but the best way is to trick yourself into doing work and be a good person, acting in the best way.

-I don’t know well how to keep being a righteous man. I’m trying to do experiment too in various ways. Mostly I try to redefine the purpose of acting in a certain way to have a different meaning than that defined in merely doing it.

Nimekupenda upya. ep #02

"Baraka?"

NYANDA MARCO

(Tunarudishwa mwaka mmoja nyuma)

Ni asubuhi karibu na msitu wa Matongo pale ambapo mto Mwesa unatokea wanasikika wanawake wanne wanakatiza wakiwa wamebeba majembe wakiongea Kisukuma.

Bebe nang’o oleyomba John akishihaga
(we nawe unasema John anamsaliti mke wake)

Ghafla mwanamke wa kwanza anapiga kelele

Mayoo

Wenzake wanamuuliza

Ke nang’o?

(Vipi na wewe?)

Anawajibu akiwa na mshituko mkubwa huku akiwasonteshea sehemu kwa mbele

Lolaga he naho

(Tazama pale)

Anaoneka Ally akiwa amelala akiwa amejawa na majeraha makubwa.

Wanawake hao wanapiga kelele wote kwa pamoja

Wooooh

…

(Tunarudi wakati wa sasa mwaka mmoja ukiwa umeshapita)

Tunamwona Ally akiwa Shambani na mzee John.

Inaonekana wapo wakiwa wana assess shamba lao. This stems from the “don’t read code” and overwhelming sheer amount of LOC you can’t review.

It’s not like we are suckers of control, there is always the final version you always see in your head and you want it to come out alive. As a hacker you are always obsessed with even tiny details to see it come true. You can’t turn this off in your brain.

AI and what everyone else encourages others to do doesn’t give you this chance; they tell you to accept whatever is cooked up just because it’s “statistically” the best option from datasets, they don’t want you to even look at what AI has made (who read code now days). As a result you hate it as you can’t get what you “really” want.

But here is the thing:

Most of innovation comes out when you force out what’s in your head; get out every inch of curiosity, everything you think you should try out. You cross check the specs of what you made, if it something doesn’t add up you scratch everything and start all over again. That is how great things are baked. You can’t get that solely with lottery tickets.

So how can you make these devs happy while still using the benefits of AI?

It’s might not be possible 100% but at least:

-AI and harnesses used should be designed in the most efficient way to make hackers happy that they get to build with AI what they truly really want.

default mode

back to the way we have always been doing things.

NYANDA MARCO

The first day you are coming back, you say you are tired of the way you have been doing things. But I did it anyway because I felt compelled to share what I had learned as a recent college graduate—there were circumstances which made me be in a group with a bunch of college students.

In all these years with my experience of writing I have come to realize a few things:

-You will know you didn’t know it well until you start to write about it. Writing has this strange way of showing how dumb I’m in things I usually consider myself smart while thinking or talking about it.

-Most of my ideas came while I was writing. You can’t believe this a tonne of how the general idea of risefromCollege is it’s from all the essays I wrote.

-I get to understand it more if I write it. Writing put my worries, new insights and knowledge I got into clarity; it’s like I’m rewatching from a different angle close up.

-Writing is the way of thinking. Whenever I’m stuck, whenever I need to make a decision writing gives me power than merely just thinking it up in my head.

These experiences are so profound to me that it made me to take into heart writing as a MOAT I have against others.

But there is other two things which were happening in the background alongside writing in all this time:

The first one is I started programming. This goes back in my second year in college when I needed a website for the startup idea I was working on. The solution was to use website builders; at the time I was trying Wix and Squarespace. But these services were expensive to me and I got limited features, so I decided to learn coding to make my own websites.

The second thing was I was so into making a startup of my own. This led me to dive in into the life of startups early on, trying out many things, failed a bunch of time and finally got this one clear understanding: make something people want—thanks YC, though I got rejected once :)

The lessons I learned in these other experiences which applies to my writing:

-In programming you can’t understand well the codes you haven’t written. You have to have the context of what the coder was thinking, you have to be aware what is the codebase for.

-In startups it's best to live the problem you are solving. You have to feel the pain as your users so as to make the best solution for them—that’s the only way I can pay you

I was into writing my diaries heavily which made me to believe that I was also a writer. But these beliefs faded whenever I sat down to try to write something for others to read; I couldn’t bring myself to write anything useful and sounding. Ultimately, I ended up doubting myself if I really had the potential.

There was a time I tried to write with AI, but it didn’t work out and I was not proud of my work.

But one day as I was writing to a WhatsApp group full of college students—as a big bro bored and decided to dump a long chat message—surprisingly I wrote it seamlessly. More shockingly I got good feedback even though I wrote it in a mixture of English and Swahili :)

It was advice to the students based on what I have seen in my first days as an employee.

Then it hit me: I knew this stuff so deep, I was thinking about this thing most of the time while at work, it was something I had a mixture of regrets as I didn’t know it well when I was in college and I wished I knew it too. I was able to write it not because I was just lucky; it was because I was experiencing it myself, I knew the right words to describe my pain as I have been feeling it every day.

I got good feedback regardless because someone could feel me, as it was like I was a runaway student who came back to class to share what I have found; but now as a student and not some professors—there was a sync between my readers and me as I used myself as a scapegoat.

That long chat message turned into one of the first essays in risefromCollege and it marked the birth of it. From there I realized the trick I can use to be a “real” writer:

Write what you are living.

You are writing for someone else to read. Just like how one can’t read well the codes he hasn’t written, one can’t read well the things not written to sync with his ways of thinking and viewing the world. The best way to get this link is to be that person, have the same life to have the same patterns of thinking.

You can’t sell well the product people don’t want. There is no better test for that than trying to buy it yourself first. Live the problem you are writing. If you need it probably there is a section in this world like you will need it too.

All my writing has been this way so far, there is a good chance you can see my thoughts pattern from everything I write online.

I believe the right customers will read what I write if it fits their needs.

risefromCollege (Chapter 1)

Your Success Story Starts in College

NYANDA MARCO

This post was originally posted on risefromCollege. Will you be dumped too into the pool of graduates who have no job? Will what you are struggling with now in college be worthless after graduation? If you are thinking like that, let me add something more hurtful: there is a high likelihood this will happen to you, just like other graduates in the street.

Why? Because the approaches commonly used don’t guarantee success immediately after graduation.

But why not so effective?

You’ll learn more about this below but first let’s start with the way you can escape this trap which most graduates have fallen into.

If you want to escape this trap, just do this one thing: Start the hustle in college. If you can even start to do it from the first moment you stepped into college, do it, but don’t wait until you graduate. Whether you want to be employed or to do your own projects after graduation, start to work on this now, while you are in college.

For all those three years (or even more) in college, if you use them for this, it is more likely you’ll be ahead and different from those who started this hustle immediately after college. Even if what you tried failed, what you’ll gain will be much more valuable than just mere certificates.

If you’re in with this, welcome to risefromCollege. The platform and mission aimed to help college students fight this unemployment issue while in college and not after graduation.

Our core philosophy is simple: start during college, don’t wait until you graduate to start.

The key is to start trying things which might lead to increasing your “employability” or developing your own project as a business while you’re in college.

You #TryOutThings because we believe it’s not a one-shot success thing. You make lots of attempts, and maybe one of your attempts might succeed and launch your career.

Even if they don’t, you’ll gain valuable experience and skills along the way—a far better investment than graduating without practical knowledge.

The key is to look for things which can lead to your breakthrough opportunity and try them.

For this to go well, there are other key ingredients you also need.

The first ingredient is skills together with knowledge. We call them #risingTools because these are the essential tools you should have in your backpack—tools you can use to grab any opportunity coming your way or fight any obstacle on your way. Without them, opportunities will just slip between your fingers easily. If you are not fully packed with these tools now, it’s your task to go and learn all these.

The other ingredient is #Exposure: What you don’t know so that you can know now. This can be eye-opening insights and perspectives—the aim is to equip your brain with a mindset that enables you to see opportunities where others haven’t seen them or move away from the conventional mindset of most college students, anything which removes you from the dark.

Okay, to try to answer the question why the common approach of graduates doesn’t work, first consider this general life model:

— For every success or anything we aspire to accomplish, there is a zero line where we begin the grind to reach there. To reach that level where we are satisfied, it often takes years with a lot of trials and full of uncertainties—luck won’t be on your side all the time.

— Still, you’ll need to work hard and creatively no matter what the circumstances—it’s rare to have food come to your table where you have been relaxing.

Now, the reason most graduates have fallen into this trap and sometimes failed to embrace reality is that: as a recent graduate, the same life model principle still applies to you: it’ll take years to feel happy that you went to college and got something from it. That’s the fact and it’s totally normal: “you are just beginning; things can’t work out for you in a flash”.

But we are still lamenting that we have graduated but without jobs. No, you’ll get jobs but not that soon after graduation (if you are not that lucky)—but still this is with a precondition to keep the fight on every day.

— But what if we moved that zero line of starting back to your early days in college? What if, alongside your studies, you explored different opportunities—trying out new things to boost your employability or even start a project that could become your business?

— Even if you failed, you would still gain something—something that could prove useful instead of entering the world empty-handed. It would make your transition to life after college much smoother because you started sooner and not soon after graduation.

This is what we call risefromCollege, the mission you can embody specifically for starting your success while in college and not waiting until you graduate.

That’s it.

So, risefromCollege.

Before we close, you must know something else: the way we’re contributing to the risefromCollege mission is by publishing weekly content in these categories:

#Exposure: Eye-opening insights (the essential stuff you’re never taught).

#risingTools: Must-have tools to transform opportunities into achievements.

#things2Try: Actionable ideas you can start today that might become the beginning of your college success story.

Additionally, we offer #uni-bus: A community space for students who dare to think differently—where you can share ideas and connect with like-minded peers without judgment.

For weekly insights to launch your success journey while still in college, visit risefromcollege.com regularly.

#moreExposure #buildUpSkills #TryOutThings

Something is missing in the AI story.

...

NYANDA MARCO

“Software engineering is dead.”

This is what I hear everyday.

As someone who became somehow good in programming business around the corner of 2022 hearing these words constantly honestly it brought traces of disappointment in me (what was I excited about!!).

The hype is so strong making you feel like it’s the end of the world. And of course you can feel this looking at how AI keep getting better everyday.

I tried to write my take on AI before, but I have found something else which needs to be addressed:

The stories around AI are telling you to pack your things and find something else to do as everything will be replaced by AI.

It’s like we are told you don’t have to think about coming up with things anymore, AI will come up with them and create everything. We see countless showoffs on the internet of what people have made in a day. It’s sooo over.

We are forced to see there is no need to create software anymore.

I accept AI is so good in its own ways, but I had questions which stopped me to think again about the “give up” direction we are told to take:

Will AI replace WhatsApp, Google search, Substack so easily?

Our lives in 21st century is running on software; don’t we need software anymore?

If we pack our bags and go who will prompt the AI to generate software?

These questions made me to question the narration we receive everyday about AI.

There is something missing in this story:

AI won’t use itself. People use it, we need human brains to steer it.

“Everything is so over” is a misguiding narration. People should stop these marketing hyped stories otherwise all of us will be over:

-You can’t make AI make what you “really” want. If there is no one to force it, we will all be eating slops we don’t want.

-AI can’t replace WhatsApp, Substack or other major platforms. Think about that again, brain power is needed.

-AI is smart after using data from the past. We need new data from the future to keep it smart and who supplies that?

If you push fear to young talents who are into software, we won’t get the data needed to train AI on for it to continue creating great stuff. We won’t get people who are strong to come up with new revolutionary ways which AI can’t even touch the surface.

AI is a new tool. It’s not great in everything, but as a tool we should find out how we can use it to our advantage.

This is the story which should be emphasized more.
